I have the 8600GT and you should install the binary drivers. See the aforemention NVIDIA page on the wiki for more info. The only other trick is to *never* use the YaST tool to change the display settings. It just makes things worse. Always use the nvidia-config program to change them. Also, run the nvidia-config program as root for best results.
