Thanks for someone finally answering. 

I got it to work by changing rt61pci.ko to rt61pci.ko.old in 
/lib/modules/2.6.22.5-31-default/updates.  I had already set the card up under 
Yast2.  I am not sure why rt61pci fails but rt61 (CVS) version works.
