I did the ulimit (which seems to do somethign with memory) and then started 
picasa from the cli.

I got the license agreement - which I didn't before - and then nothing.

I didn't originally have a .picasa folder in my home folder. I do now.

I went to /opt/picasa/bin to launch it.

Still nothing.

Maybe like Marcus said, there will be a new version.

I'll post a note on the Google groups for Picasa.  I doubt this is a SUSE 
problem but seems to appear with some libraries or whatnot shipped with SUSE.
