The most likely reason would seem to be that he's driving an LCD display 
with it and it's native resolution (and maximum resolution) are the 
1680x1050 he requests.

(I note that 1680x1050 displays seem far more common these days than 
1600x1200, and I'm really glad I got my ViewSonic VP201b, which is 
1600x1200, when the getting was good, if somewhat pricey.)
