        I have no Java in firefox even though yast shows java-1.5 and java-1.5
runtime installed. I have read the threads about the broken links and
run the update-alternatives --config --java and update-alternatives
--config --javac. Neither help and simply say no alternatives are
available. I have also completely removed and reinstalled java 1.5
through Yast. Still no joy.

Check the plugins manually: "ls -l /usr/lib/firefox/plugins" should list something like this (10.2)

libjavaplugin_oji.so -> /usr/lib/browser-plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so*

It is a symlink; So, we go and check the second part:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~> ls -l /usr/lib/browser-plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 83 2007-10-18 21:54
/usr/lib/browser-plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so ->
/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun-1.5.0_update13/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so

Again:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~> ls -l
/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun-1.5.0_update13/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 103436 2007-09-26 05:42
/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun-1.5.0_update13/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so

Finally, we got a real file. If at some step you don't, well, simply repair the symlink. How? Well, there are many methods; I like 'mc'.

Your case could be different; for instance, in 10.3 the initial symlink could be "javaplugin.so":

/usr/lib/browser-plugins/javaplugin.so --> /etc/alternatives/javaplugin
