I'm curious. Have you tried under a different login name to see if the situation persists across the board or just specific to your current login account? I used to have a similar problem in 9.3 Every other day, I would have no desktop icons or anything. I would have to go into terminal and kill nautilus which then auto-restarted itself. I did that by doing "ps aux | grep nautilus" and then kill the resulting PID.
