You could try the 'fish://' ioslave (which implements secure file transfer 
over an ssh shell session for servers that don't use the sftp module of ssh).  
If it works normally either we have a problem in the sftp ioslave or the 
provider has a problem with their sftp module.

To find out which of those is the case I suggest you try testing sftp:// and 
fish:// connections to a different ssh server - your own, maybe?
