I doubt this has anything to do with the OS. It is completely a function of the hardware. I've had several laptops under Linux (Mandrake 6.0, Mandrake 8.1, SUSE 9.1-10.2) and the switching occurs when the hardware wants it to. On my dell it happens when I press the button.
