Follow this to disable compiz, if your issue is compiz:

gnome-xgl-switch --disable-xgl (as root, if using xgl)

touch $HOME/.config/compiz/disable-compiz (as user, if using compiz-manager)

If the issue is gnome:

rm  -rf /home/username/.gnome*
rm  -rf /home/username/.gconf*
rm -rf /tmp/.*
rm -rf /tmp/*
