.local is reserved for zeroconf use. The "funky" stuff you refer to is 
multicast DNS, as specified by the zeroconf spec and various RFCs

But if you deliberately want to set up a broken configuration despite knowing 
it is wrong, you can edit /etc/host.conf and add "mdns off"
