Linux on Laptops maintains reports of linux compatibility for a wide variety of laptops: http://www.linux-on-laptops.com I have recently installed openSuse on several Dell notebooks -- an Inspiron 1501, a 1505, and a Precision M90. They all work well with openSuse 10.2/10.3 out of the box.
