Thanks for the response.  I may have fixed it by moving my user
directory to a backup location, creating a new user, then moving back
the files I needed from the old data.

This is the second time in two weeks I've had to do this, though the
symptoms were quite different each time.

If there's a good side to this, I'm learning what files are important
and what they're for.

Now, if I could get display screens to show Danish characters.  I can
type them in using a Danish keyboard setup, but they don't display in a
lot of firefox locations; and I occasionally would like to have ø æ and
å at my disposal.
