Thanks Kai, Anders, Sunny and Bryen.  Sorry for the delay but had some 
problems that kept me from the computer for a few days.

I have tried all the suggested solutions and still no joy.  I reloaded the 
codecs suggested and no luck.  I tried to view a small mpeg file with both 
xine and mplayer and was able to see it but trying to view a dvd got me the 
blue screen.  Yes, I have all the dvdcss stuff that allows me to read and 
play dvds and even copy them but cannot play on either Mplayer or Kaffeine or 
Gxine.

I wonder if the driver for the intel 855GM video chip has changed.
