Just want to add that this was solved. I don't know why the SuSE Updater disappeared from the panel, but after reinstalling boost and zypper, it did not come back. I then did a subsequent YOU, and found an interesting unsolvable dependency. I fixed that by adding another repository, but in further looking around, I found that the opensuse-updater-kde package was not installed. Once installed, the updater began working correctly.
