I'd have thought you would remember installing a kernel update via YaST Online 
Update since YOU is launched manually and selected updates are displayed in 
advance and the update in question incorporates a pop-up dialogue warning 
that the system should be rebooted afterwards.

In any case, you wrote "the device map looks OK etc. etc." but I think you'll 
want to take a second and much closer look... particularly 
at /boot/grub/menu.lst.

Starting with 10.2 and especially in cases where YaST2 encounters multiple 
hard drives and/or operating systems and/or a system with more than just 
a 'typical' number (or arrangement) of partitions, it has a tendency to write 
a broken menu.lst.

Feel free to send me your device.map and menu.lst directly if you want some 
help sanity checking them.
