For me, it wasjust as simple as I stated above.
I ran:
nvidia-config
Then ran:
nvidia-settings
This one gave me a gui where I checked settings.
Then I rebooted, and it came up centered perfectly.

It doesn't work for me.
If I fix console/boot messages, then X is not well tuned.
I had problems with my Nvidia card until I discovered the following solution:
Go to <http://en.opensuse.org/NVIDIA> and look for "The easy way."
