Bob,

I had this exact same problem back in July of 2006. What made it even
more interesting is that if I logged in as root Firefox worked
flawlessly. What I ended up doing was deleting the /.mozilla folder in
he home directory of the user account that was exhibiting the problem
and it worked from that point forward. You will loose bookmarks, but if
you have backed those up you should be fine.....
