Theo, I suspect one of your problems is that (by default) 10.3 has problems with some CD / DVD players that somehow impacts HDD is the system. (ie. ATAPI devices). See Novell Bugzilla 331610 for a little of the history. And when its fixed, I suspect that bugzilla will get updated. Until then, I would try to use the traditional ide drivers. The 10.3 release notes tell you how to invoke them instead of the new ones that 10.3 defaults to.
