For what it's worth, you can get ordinary POP3 service from gmail. Like
you, I didn't care for the web interface that some of my friends were
fond of. And in the end, gmail for me was completely redundant, so I
eventually stopped using it anyway. But I do know for sure that you can
connect to a POP3 server there, and as I remember, the service was
pretty good.
