My guess would be that it happens because the entire X subsystem shuts 
down and is restarted (by init) when you log out of KDE. (I guess Gnome 
doesn't do that?) Probably when the video card driver is closed, it 
drops sync and your KVM is responding to that. My KVM doesn't do that.

Two things come to mind to investigate:

1) There's a video driver option that would preclude the dropping of 
sync when its closed.

2) There's a KVM option that would preclude it from switching upon loss 
of sync.
