I'm using Radeon X1650 on the Desktop machine (Self build).
For Radeon X1650, only the driver
 
   ati-driver-installer-8.41.7-x86.x86_64.run
 
recognizes the video chip correctly, and enables 3D acceleration.

So, try with anothe driver from ATI's site.
