M> What messages do you get when you attempt a manual mount?

It mounts as expected, but I have to be root

M> Do you see your usb controller(s) in an lspci -v printout?

Sure

I have just noticed the processes
 4936 ? Ss 0:00 ivman
 4938 ? S< 0:00 [scsi_eh_2]
 4939 ? S< 0:00 [usb-storage]
 4964 ? S 0:00 hald-addon-storage: polling /dev/sdb (every 16 sec)
which is odd as it should be mounting /dev/sdb1 which works my hand

So it still looks like the change to sdX
