For transferring to a DVD, I've actually (now don't be shocked) had good luck 
with the command line. I have the mencoder command setup in a bash script:

I then take the mpg files and convert them to DVD using the KDE DVD Authoring 
Wizard. A little unpolished (doesn't tell you when a process is done) but 
works perfectly.
