ok, then probably has to do with x86_64 which I have and have seen
reported the abnormality with the new acroread or whatever they call
it now  :^).  

my acroread will *only* display one file, no tabbed display available.
Each opening for display of a new fill presents a new window/instance.
This is true also from the command line, ie:
   acroread  file1.pdf file2.pdf file3.pdf
