I do not want to add fuel to the fire, but since I've been mentioned I'll share my view of this. First of all I do not see a very big problem at all. It is good for the webwork users that there is still a "team" devoted to the support and development of Webwork 1.x.. If this had not been the case we would perhaps never have had a real 1.3 release, and definitely not a 1.4 release, both of which have improved stability and performance as well as added some new features.
And now when Webwork 2 has finally been released the problem is even smaller. New users will naturally choose to go with WW2 so there is a small risk of WW1.x "stealing" users from WW2. Then there is the question about migrating to WW2. Personally there is neither the time or the money at this point to even try a conversion of our application. Even if it would go smoothly there is still a lot of testing to be done before such a move is completed. Perhaps I will try it sometime in the future, we'll see. So until then I will continue with support and development of WW1.x as long as I think it's fun. That is probably as long as I am not doing it alone and there are still users who make themselves heard now and then. After reading the discussion it all seems to boil down to one question: What kind of changes is the WW1.x "team" allowed to do to the codebase? What Jason wrote makes sense: > Both can be supported and have their own release schedules, and their own teams > working on them. We definitely need to coordinate to make sure any bugs > are guaranteed fixed in both spots, and any features added to 1.4+ > should at least be evaluated for going into 2.0 (some may not make > sense). New features that are added to 1.x are already discussed on our shared mailing list first. The Jira issues show up on the same CVS list as well, so there is no risk of WW2 developers missing them. I think the features added might be small or big, as long as they make sense and are something WW1.x users find useful. They are of course not supposed to break compatibility with existing WW1.x applications. If they are new and useful also to WW2 users then they will probably be ported there by the WW2 team sooner or later. Patrick asked for roadmaps for WW1.x. I think the features of WW1.4.1 have already been mentioned by Hani and discussed on the list before. Beyond that I cannot give one, not even for my own plans, because I do not want to give promises I cannot keep. Even if I mentioned my plans of X, Y and Z it could take a long time (if ever) before I have the sparetime to realize them.
