It's possible to do this.
Check out this link (or search for "linux flash 9"): 
http://www.howtoforge.com/native_linux_flash_player9_in_ubuntu

And follow the "3.1 Install The .tar.gz Version" section

Keep in mind that the plugin will only work for the individual computer you
install Flash on, it won't be system-wide.
