David,
Well, I don't really do anything with the name resolution. My clients just
find the OTC server and DHCP server.
I have a Windows 2008 OTC server (previously I was using a Windows XP OTC
server). I am in active directory and one of my domain controllers does
DHCP. I never really see the OTC login screen since I am in kiosk mode. I
don't use the realm user database. My users log into the terminal server
using their active directory credentials.
I just powered on one of my oldest (vintage 2003) OTC clients and it took
75 seconds to get to the Windows login. I know that I can take a whole lab
(30 devices) from power off to Windows login just about as fast as I can hit
the power buttons. I have 4 or 5 different PCs models as OTC clients.
Besides the forum here, I have found that searching the client log file for
errors and "googling" the errors have helped. I do the same with the lines
being displayed by the thin client while it is booting. If there is a line
being displayed for a long time, I would research that line. If you haven't
checked the logs on the OTC server and DHCP server, I would also do that.
Sounds like you are much more linux fluent than I am. (I was a unix user
back in the 1980s and early 1990's but never an administrator.)
There are definite differences among clients, I would try a second different
PC to see if it behaves the same. I had one PC model that I couldn't use (on
0.4.5) because the NIC was not supported in the client image. I only had six
of them and it wasn't worth my time to try to add support for the NIC myself
- given my limited Linux knowledge.
I wish I could be more help.
