Hello Clay,
for questions to FreeRDP-usage please refer to the FreeRDP-documentation or
their mailinglist.
We "only" use the FreeRDP-binary/package add the associated libraries and
implement it in the openthinclient-managment.
But the functionality itself depends on FreeRDP.
So you can test the FreeRDP with different parameters, like you did it.
But openthinclient can not guarantee the working of e.g. "-u".
Another way is: deactivate NLA on the server.
(I don't know the exact description.....)

Properties -> dropdown task -> edit -> security
uncheck "Accept connection by computer allow remote desktop with network
level authentication"
