For first experiences running OpenVAS it would be ok to install preconfigured packages for Ubuntu. Type "apt-cache search openvas" to see for available packages.Hi Stefan,Things much clear now.I will try to setup up the things in a virtual environment, as Virtual Box and ubantu both are open source. Can you please verify the below URLS for the entire client/server setup for OPenvas, then i can go ahead with all the correct information. openvas-client-3.0.2.tar.gz OpenVas Client openvas-server-2.0.3.tar.gz Open Vas Server http://www.virtualbox.org/ Virtual Box http://www.ubuntu.com/ Ubuntu Request you to confirm if the above links are enough to go for the entire setup or not. To be up to date with current development i'd suggest to build all by yourself. You should have basic knowledge about Linux to do this. I have build an easy to use environment for building and updating, tested on Ubuntu. You can get it as a subversion repository from https://subversion.unibw.de/public/openvas (see README).
Please note, that when running OpenVAS and doing serious vulnerability scans it's essential to know what you are doing. Understanding Linux should be part of this.
