Excuse me if this is a stupid question, but the firewall is not turned on on 
the OpenVAS appliance by default is it? How can I check to see if it is on? 
(Sorry, I am very much a Linux newbie!)

You might want to run a tcpdump or wireshark on the traffic to make sure your 
firewall (either local or remote) aren't blocking it.  If you have a proxy in 
the mix, you will have to authenticate to it in order to use wget.
