In part it may not like my running XFCE as a desktop? It generally runs
Gnome and KDE stuff fine though - all the libraries are in place here for
that.

Does anyone have OpenVAS actually running on Ubuntu 12.04?

Considering that security is in part about crossing your t's and dotting
your i's, the provision of packages and instructions that don't seem to have
been tested is not an encouraging sign. No offense intended. I'm sure it's
wonderful stuff when it works.
