I have same problem when I install OpenVAS 5.0 on CentOS 6.0 .
Can you try that command in your system.
(in my guess, that command maybe the same for restart your system.)
--
/etc/init.d/openvas-administrator start
openvas-nvt-sync
openvassd restart
openvasmd restart
--

then try again check OpenVAS.  (use openvas-check-setup)
