Hello OpenVAS Users,

a first step during the scan is to determin which of the
IP of the target range are "alive". This is also
called the "host discovery".

Depending on your network it may happen your scans
get slow (judged alive but in fact dead) or leave
out out hosts (judged dead but in fact alive).
There are config options to handle cases in optimal
way.

Currently the configuration is hidden in the Scan Config.
It is desirable to make it more explicit because often
users apply the wrong method and are annoyed by
very long scan duration. Full&Fast is conservative,
avoiding False Negatives risking longer scan duration.

The question where I like you opinion is:

Where to place the Host Discovery best?

a) make "Host Discovery" a special section of a Scan Config
   with explanations and hints

b) make "Host Discovery" settings part of a task (alterable
   any time)

c) make "Host Discovery" a configuration object of its own
that can be attached to a Task like we do with Credentials.

d) make "Host Discovery" settings part of Target object
   d.1) alterable
   d.2) unalterable

e) Other?

Any other insights into this aspect?

Best

Jan
