Using OpenVAS 6 on CentOS 6 as a test we've lowered the max host_hosts and max_checks setting in the openvassd.conf file to 1 and 5 respectively. Starting up 3 concurrent tasks from the GUI shows all three running and the load on the scanning server hovering around 11/12 with 12 seperate openvassd testing processes running. I would expect only one host to be scanned and a max of 5 concurrent scanning processes running. Am I not understanding which max_hosts/checks configuration has precedence or is this a known issue? It looks like the settings in openvassd.conf are being ignored and those same settings specified with each task are being applied (under Scan Intensity).
