Someone got OpenVAS to compile and run on a Raspberry Pi, which only has
512MB of RAM.

If I run it in a VM to scan just a couple hosts, I usually only allocate
2GB, but for any sort of enterprise scanning, I would definitely go with 4
to 8.  You're just asking for unnecessary headaches otherwise.
