As I understand it OpenVAS updates its scap data, NVT's and Cert data
automatically but I don't know how this happens. The reason is that my server
sits behind a proxy and by setting the RSYNC_PROXY variable it works well by
hand running openvas-scapdata-sync, openvas-nvt-sync and openvas-certdata-sync.

The proxy variable is set by a script under /etc/profile.d on our Centos 7
system.

My question is: Does openvas 8 try to sync everything by itself or is there
something I have to set up and if it does try to do it itself, will it pick up
the RSYNC_PROXY environment variable?

normally there are cronjobs for that

[root@openvas:~]$ rpm -q --file /etc/cron.d/openvas-sync-plugins
openvas-scanner-5.0.5-3.fc23.x86_64
