After not being able to resolve why some hosts show the scanning didn't
finish after the task said it was complete, I elected to try a removal and
reinstallation of OpenVAS using the following:

I did the following:

yum erase openvas openvas-*

rm -fr /var/cache/openvas

rm -fr /var/log/openvas

rm -fr /var/lib/openvas

yum erase redis

yum erase atomic-release-1.0-21.el7.art.noarch

### REBOOT ###

Followed by the typical installation instructions for CentOS 7 on the
OpenVAS website.

The openvas-check-setup returns the following:

openvas-check-setup 2.3.2

Test completeness and readiness of OpenVAS-8

  (add '--v6' or '--v7' or '--v9'

if you want to check for another OpenVAS version)

Please report us any non-detected problems and

help us to improve this check routine:

Send us the log-file (/tmp/openvas-check-setup.log) to help analyze the
problem.

Use the parameter --server to skip checks for client tools

  like GSD and OpenVAS-CLI.

collection and run 'openvasmd --rebuild'.

WARNING: OpenVAS Scanner is NOT running!

        SUGGEST: Start OpenVAS Scanner (openvassd).

ERROR: Your OpenVAS-8 installation is not yet complete!

Please follow the instructions marked with FIX above and run this

script again.

However, the rebuild hangs indefinitely here:

openvasmd --rebuild --progress --verbose

Rebuilding NVT cache... \

I've been searching for a solution to this the past couple of days but can't
find one. Does anyone have a suggestion I might try? Thanks
