I am not sure that your scope and OpenVAS do really match.
If you just want to do discovery, tools with less resource needs may match.
But:

OpenVAS is just scanning IP addresses. If NAT is implemented properly, it will 
work, but the keep the load on the NAT device in mind, there are a lot of 
connections.
