I noticed the script in ping_host.nasl invokes "exit(0)" if the following preferences --"Report about unreachable Hosts" and "Mark unreachable Host as dead (not scanning)" -- are not selected. I have to set one or both of the previous options to "yes" in order to ping the target host and execute the script entirely. Thank you so much for the suggestion Christian.
