it is my experience that many services in production mode are not
based on official packages, but rather self-compiled, self-pached, 
self-optimized.

I do not have an answer at hand how to handle the situation best.
Thomas seems to say, look at practice and majorities and relate to effords.
This is a reasonable approach opposed to conquering the whole world in one go.
Though I think there might exist cases where minority circumstances that
a cheap to solve and of great importance.

In such situations where I can not really decide immediately, I create a
diagramme or other sorts of drawing to illustrate the work/decision flow,
starting with the standard cases.
Anyone feels like creating such a figure that explains the scan/decision flow ?
