This, in particular, does not look correct for 2.4

2.4 configure has lots of checks like this:

                OPENSSL_PKG_ERRORS=`$PKG_CONFIG --short-errors --print-errors --
cflags --libs "libcrypto >= 0.9.8, libssl >= 0.9.8" 2>&1`
