Not sure why this was left out in the sun for so long... seems I ran
out of steam for the integers. Anyway, thanks to Razvan for looking
at this - and yes, this should not really be needed ("the compiler knows
that 'len' is a positive integer at this point") but it's not too ugly,
and gets rid of one pair of #pragmas
