This is not actually anything route-metric can influence. If you use
tap and dhcp, there is nothing OpenVPN can do about it, and nothing we
can do to "fix" anything.
Do what people already have recommended: use tun (has less overhead anyway,
and more fine-grained control about things), and only push a route for
whichever networks you need. If you have no idea what I'm talking about,
get jjk's OpenVPN book and read it up.
