Hi all,
It's very good to have a discussion on this (though I'd do it on
openvpn-devel)
Yeah, the -user list is getting more than a fair dose of technical
talk these
days. But this list has been quiet, a little more noise wont hurt, I hope.
this is getting slightly off-topic, but still useful.

Surely dhcp queries can be responded to from openvpn itself. But, even if
tun interfaces pass-through DHCP discover (do they?), most dhcp-client
softwares ignore layer 3 interfaces. I believe this was discussed on
openvpn-devel ( -users?) a long time ago.
hmm hadn't thought of that. Of course, on Windows "tun" mode is a
special case of "tap" mode, whereas on Linux it's the other way round
(more or less). Therefore, on Windows, DHCP requests are indeed
forwarded to the tap-win driver, regardless of tun/tap. I'll do some
investigating on the current state of things on Linux - I do know that
the tun/tap driver changed a bit over the last few years, mostly for
cloud provisioning and such. Could be that pass-through DHCP is now
implemented.
cheers,
