My gut feeling is that the process was hanging because it couldn't
output its log information - like, disk full, or dead syslogd 
(which for some systems can lead to syslog clients blocking).

Nearly impossible to diagnose after the fact, and non-typical behaviour
(so it really should reconnect just fine on its own).
