I do not have a setup to test this but I believe you can use the pam_sss
module to handle SSSD authentication through PAM. If so, set up a PAM
config file for openvpn with "auth sufficient/required pam_sss.so" -- tune
it to suite your needs such as include pam_unix.so as a fallback or not
etc.. Then use the auth-pam plugin in the openvpn config file.
