Depending on the openvpn server setup, it's possible that they are 
redirecting all traffic to the VPN ("redirect-gateway") and not permitting
Internet access while the VPN is up.

This is not a generic OpenVPN issue, it's something in the way the server
is sending configs to the client, so you need to check with that company
whether this is the expected effect, or a bug.
