Both of these options are recommended by OpenVPN Inc, by the way.

This client has less visible "bell and whistles" for the end-user, and quite
user-friendly for non-tech users. Configuration settings can only be modified
by removing and importing a new configuration file. The goal for OpenVPN
Connect is to be rock solid and long term stable.

OpenVPN Connect currently uses mbed TLS as the SSL library, which is for some
users behaving a bit different than OpenSSL. For most use cases, this won't
be a big problem. But for some, this might not utilize some SSL/TLS protocol
specific features or mbed TLS may reject some certificates.

This client has more knobs to tweak and adjust, and you can essentially tweak
configuration profiles from with-in the app as well. The OpenVPN 2 code base
is far more bleeding edge, and is often based on the development branch of
OpenVPN 2, so the stability may vary a bit more.

As of v0.7.5 (or so) you can also flip between OpenVPN 2 and OpenVPN 3
implementations of the "backend" part of the the VPN tunnel.

At least the OpenVPN 2 backend is using OpenSSL. I don't know yet whether the
OpenVPN 3 backend is using OpenSSL or mbed TLS currently.

You're outdated, Samuli ;-) The "Unified client" was an internal jargon. But
essentially OpenVPN Connect v3.x and newer is the new generation Connect
client. This has a completely revamped user interface, but builds on the same
OpenVPN 3 core library (just an updated version of the library).

Hope this clarified a bit more :)
