OpenVPN 2.x needs help from external scripts/plug-ins to setup this.
NetworkManager has a OpenVPN plug-in which can handle this.  And there are
some client.up/client.down scripts available in the openvpn package which can
tackle this.

We're working on providing some OpenVPN 3 Linux client packages for Debian and
Ubuntu (they are already available for Fedora/RHEL/CentOS/ScientificLinux
[0]).  The latest beta release tackles DNS configuration out-of-the-box, as
well as other improvements.  Later today I will push out yet another beta
release (goal is to have a monthly release).  For Ubuntu you will right now
need to compile it yourself, though.  But hopefully we can provide .deb
packages through an apt repository in not too far future.
