Do you have something like this in your server config:

push "route 10.0.0.0 255.255.255.0"

?

If yes, please remove it. This is probably what is creating the confusion.

When adding the VPN address with the proper netmask, a route is
automatically created with all the right parameters.

Re-adding the same route is probably creating confusion.
